Q+A: What’s Your Take on Botox + Aging?
I have been on a podcast tour with some of the most empowering women hosts on planet earth. I recently was on the Love Life Connection podcast with Veronica Grant, and she asked me about Botox and aging.
Read on or listen to the podcast to hear my take on this… and more!
Love Life Connection with Veronica Grant (transcription from 25:39):
Veronica: So I think sometimes, it's like okay, like for example, if someone wanted to get Botox…
AJK: Okay, got it.
Veronica: Do they want to get Botox because like, that's like their sole calling to look a certain way or is it because they want to be perceived as younger, which is in our society perceived as more beautiful to get the approval of either the male gaze or just so that if they're famous, for example, so that tabloids and magazines see wrinkles?
AJK: Yeah, okay. I mean, I totally get it now.
Okay. So, let me answer the question by telling you a little story. So, my partner is Middle Eastern. And we were in Jordan visiting his mom about two months ago, a month ago, and we went to the hair salon because I like to get my hair blown out, and she was sitting next to me.
And she was like, “No, no, I'm not going do any of that. I'm just here to be with you…” You know, we were just having a conversation. And so as she [hair stylist] was blowing out my hair, she [partner’s mom] was just looking at my hair and she was like, “Oh, it's so beautiful. It looks so good.”
And I said, “Auntie, do you want to get your hair blown out, too?” She looked at me she smiled and said, “Yes!”
So I immediately got her… actually I bought her five blowouts like, “Okay, you're going come here whenever you want.”
As she was getting her blowout, I could feel her spirits being lifted. She felt more beautiful. She felt happy.
She was like, “Do you think my son is going to like this?”
And she was just so happy, you know? And so that's, that's how I'm going to answer your question. Do what makes you happy!
You know if that's what… as long as you understand that your self-worth does not come from your appearance. It really needs to come from the inside out.
But sometimes from the outside in is okay too, you know, and there's something about just looking beautiful and feeling beautiful, and it's all intertwined, and it's all one.
I loved what you said, “tending to the temple.”
Sometimes you just need to do this and sometimes you just need to do that. You need to listen to yourself, and I think balance is the key, right? If you're all about Botox and plastic surgery, and there's nothing inside, well, then there's nothing inside.
If you're all about just the inside and you feel like you're neglecting your outside… there needs to be a balance; listening to your body, your skin and your soul is key and that's really what the book is about, is listening to your higher self.
